If you’re an expecting new momma reading this right now, then I bet you’re wondering if it’s truly necessary to invest in a breastfeeding prep course. Well, you’ve come to the right place. I’m here to share all my insights as to why you 1000% SHOULD take a breastfeeding prep course before baby arrives!

First off, I hope your pregnancy is treating you well and baby is thriving :)

Second, kudos to you for doing your research to prepare for this incredible new mom journey you are about to embark on. It’s a wild ride, but it’s oh-so worth it!

So, you’re wondering how or why a breastfeeding prep course would be worth your while?

Let me begin by asking the question, “Would you know how to drive a car without being taught?”

Now I have a feeling you’re thinking that you could figure it out on your own. You know one pedal makes you “go” and the other makes you “stop”. There’s a wheel to guide your movements and it would probably take some experimenting to figure out what all the different buttons and switches do.

But, would you know the rules of the road? Would you know how to safely operate that car without properly being taught how to use it?

Think about the first time you sat behind the wheel, most likely at 15 years old. You were probably super nervous. Afraid to push too hard on the pedal, thinking you’d send the car flying and then panic and not know how to stop. Now, think about the first time you were asked to park between two cars. You were probably petrified that you would accidentally hit one of the parked cars.

Breastfeeding for the first time is just like learning how to drive a car. It takes practice, and it takes proper education to feel comfortable and confident in your abilities.

Sure you could “figure it out” but the reality is, you will feel A LOT more overwhelmed, scared, and confused without preparing before that day comes.

Try to envision this for me…

You just birthed your baby less than an hour ago. Your brain is quite literally the equivalent of scrambled eggs. The nurse hands you your baby and encourages you to try to see if baby will latch onto your breast. You have no clue how to hold this tiny 7.5 pound bundle and present them to your chest. Nothing happens. You immediately get overwhelmed, feel like a failure and fearful to try again.

That’s the real life scenario you have on your horizon. Let that sink in.

It’s not meant to scare you. My intentions are to prepare you so you make the best decision for yourself to feel prepared and secure in your abilities on one of the biggest days of your life!

From an experienced momma, I am here to tell you, preparing ahead of time is the BEST thing you can do for yourself to feel confident in this incredibly vulnerable, overwhelming moment.

Now picture this scenario…

It’s been about 2 hours since you birthed your baby and you’ve been moved into your new hospital room. You’re feeling a little bit more “with it” than earlier. A new nurse comes into the room and asks you if you’re breastfeeding or formula feeding. You remember your game plan is to breastfeed and you did your homework. The nurse hands you your swaddled baby and you unbutton your nursing gown. You get baby into position and see those little lips open up as they approach your nipple.

BOOM!

She’s latched and you feel overwhelmed again. But this time, it’s overwhelming feelings of joy, happiness and pride in knowing YOU did it!

That, my friend, can be you if you invest in yourself as a new mom.

After completing an online breastfeeding course I knew:

  • How to properly hold my newborn while feeding her.

  • What a proper latch looked like and how to correct it if it wasn’t right.

  • There was a method to properly emptying both breasts.

  • How long a normal breastfeeding session would be.

I knew everything I needed to know to successfully breastfeed my baby for the first time, and then with a little extra guidance from the hospital lactation consultant, I was good as gold!

Having all this knowledge leading up to my baby’s arrival allowed me to feel empowered and confident in breastfeeding my sweet girl despite having never done it.

I was able to work with her, rather than against her, which is a common error for new moms who don’t do as much to prepare.

I’ll never forget when the lactation counselor came by my hospital room to check and see how things were going. She was so encouraging and complimentary of how quickly my baby and I were able to work as a team and begin our feeding journey with ease, rather than nerves.

So momma, this is your sign to invest in yourself as a new mom so your first breastfeeding experience can be joyous, rather than stressful. A lot of new moms opt to stop breastfeeding quickly as a result of not completing a “how to” for breastfeeding.

Knowledge is power. And I have amazing news for you.
